The Beginning
It Started Before There Was a Store.
Tony Nigro grew up around horses and hard work. His father ran a horse auction barn in Kansas City, Kansas, selling saddles and tack out of the same building he used for produce delivery. The western life wasn't a business strategy. It was just life.
Tony took what his father built and made it bigger. He ran a grocery store on Merriam Lane for 43 years. He hosted horse auctions. He traded tack, and by the 1960s he and his wife Lucy had pivoted the whole operation into a full western store. Kansas City's western community found its outfitter.
"Nigro's is small enough to appreciate you; big enough to accommodate you."
— Tony Nigro
1973
A 22-Year-Old Bets On Himself.
Tony's son George was 22 years old when he and his wife Patty decided to build something of their own. Not to take over the family store — to start a new one.
George and Patty Nigro opened their own Nigro's Western Store at 10509 Shawnee Mission Parkway in Shawnee, Kansas. Two people in their early twenties. No playbook. No guarantees. Just grit, the Nigro name, and the belief that if you show up every day and treat people right, they'll come back.
They were right.
Six Days A Week
On the Seventh, He Rode.
George's love of rodeo wasn't separate from the store — it was the store. He knew exactly what a working cowboy needed because he was one. Patty kept the store running with the kind of quiet strength that holds a family business together.
Together, they built a place the western community in Shawnee could count on. Quality goods and Honest service. From people who actually lived it.
1984
Born Into It.
She didn't know she was learning the business. She was just a kid, growing up in those aisles while other kids were somewhere else.
She watched her parents connect with customers the way only people who genuinely care can. She learned that every conversation counts. That every customer is a neighbor. That this store isn't just a business — it's a promise, kept over and over, every single day.
In 2003, Katie came on full time. She'd already been there her whole life. Now it was official.
2001
The Reputation Had Outgrown the Walls.
After nearly three decades of earning it, knowing every customer's name, every boot size, every horse they rode, the store expanded next door. More space. More selection. Same soul.
The Nigro family also became fixtures in the Kansas City charitable community, donating their skills as auctioneers to over 180 charity events every year across the area. Giving back wasn't a strategy. It was just how this family operated.
Today
The Third Generation Takes the Reins.
When George and Patty stepped back, they didn't wonder if Nigro's would be okay. They'd spent decades making sure of it.
Katie stepped into ownership carrying everything her parents built and everything her grandparents stood for before them. She didn't need anyone to explain what this place meant — she'd felt it her whole life.
Alongside her is Megan Miglianti, her best friend and right hand. Each day, they work together while also raising their sons in the store, like the generations before them did. Their next chapter is Nigro's online: the same store, the same values, the same family, just reaching further.
