How to Stack Jeans Over Cowboy Boots (and What Length to Buy)
You can have the best pair of boots in the county and still not look right if your jeans are the wrong length. Stacking is the classic way to wear denim with cowboy boots, and it's one of the questions we answer most at the counter in Shawnee. Here's how to get it right.
What are stacked jeans?
Stacked jeans are cut long enough that the extra length gathers, or "stacks," in soft folds over the shaft of your boot. The jean covers most of the boot, rests on the vamp in front, and reaches the heel in back. It isn't just a look. Longer jeans stay down over your boots when you sit, ride, climb into a truck or work on your knees.
The golden rule for stacked jeans
Sit down. The back of your jeans shouldn't move. If the hem rides up and shows the back of your boot when you sit, your jeans are too short and it's time for a longer inseam.

What length jeans to wear with cowboy boots
Most people who stack their jeans buy one to two inches longer than their regular inseam. If you wear a 32 with sneakers, try a 33 or 34 with boots. A few things change that number:
- Heel height. A taller riding or dress heel needs more length than a flat work boot.
- How much stack you like. A light stack is a fold or two. Rodeo cowboys often like theirs longer.
- Shrinkage. Rigid and raw denim can shrink after the first wash. If you're buying unwashed jeans, allow for it or buy prewashed.
The best test is still the golden rule: put on your boots, put on the jeans, and sit down.
The best jean cuts for stacking over boots
Men's
Look for a bootcut or a straight leg with a wide enough leg opening to slide over the boot shaft. Skinny and tapered jeans bunch at the ankle and never sit right over a boot. Favorites include Wrangler Cowboy Cut, Kimes Ranch, Cinch and Ariat.
Women's
A bootcut or flare stacks beautifully over a western boot. A high rise with a long inseam lengthens your leg, especially with a heeled boot. Trouser-leg and wide-leg jeans can also work over a boot if the hem reaches the heel. See our women's Ariat jeans and Kimes Ranch styles.
Common stacking mistakes
- Jeans that stop at the top of the boot. Too short. You'll see the shaft every time you move.
- Tucking bootcut jeans into cowboy boots. That's for working in mud and snow, not for the look.
- Too much fabric dragging on the ground. A stack should rest on the boot, not under your heel.
- The wrong leg opening. If the jean won't slide over the shaft, it won't stack.
Stacked jeans FAQ
How long should jeans be with cowboy boots?
Long enough to reach the heel in back and stay put when you sit down. For most people that's one to two inches longer than their regular inseam.
Should jeans go over or inside cowboy boots?
Over. Jeans are worn over the boot shaft. Tucking in is for mud, snow and working cattle.
What jeans are best for cowboy boots?
Bootcut, straight leg and flare jeans with a leg opening wide enough to fit over the boot.
Are stacked jeans still in style?
Stacked jeans have been the working cowboy's standard for generations, and they're as popular as ever.
