Resistol Hats
Resistol want the tape higher up your head than most hatters do.
Their instruction: measure “about three-quarters of an inch above your ears and just above your eyebrows.” Stetson — same parent company — say about an eighth of an inch above the ear. That difference is worth roughly a size. If you are ordering without trying the hat on, measure both ways and take the larger number.
Where the tape goes
| Maker |
Where they say to measure |
| Resistol |
About ¾″ above the ears, just above the eyebrows |
| Stetson |
About ⅛″ above the ear |
Use a cloth tape, or a piece of string you can lay against a ruler afterwards. In Resistol’s words, “keep the tape level and snug without pulling it too tightly.” Measure twice.

Between sizes
Resistol say to go up: “If your measurement falls between sizes, it’s generally best to size up and choose the larger size. A slightly larger hat can be adjusted with sizing tape or stuffing materials, like paper towels, while a hat that’s too small may become uncomfortable over time.” We agree — a strip of sizing tape behind the sweatband closes a gap, and nothing fixes a hat that is too small.
Resistol publish their size conversion as a picture rather than as figures, so we have not retyped it — we will not print numbers we cannot read off their own page and stand behind. For a conversion table in plain text, hat size to inches to centimetres, see our hat sizing guide. Those figures are the ones Stetson publish, so remember the measuring difference above before you read off a size.
Come get measured
We keep a proper conformateur behind the counter, and we will steam and shape a hat to your head while you wait. Ten minutes, and it is the difference between a hat you wear and a hat that sits on a shelf.
